Tooth Extractions

Striving to providing our patients with great smiles that will last

The Importance of tooth extractions

Tooth extractions may be necessary when the tooth is beyond repair or if there is a severe infection. The removal of the tooth requires local anesthesia & basic surgery.

If your tooth is suffering from severe decay or damage, your dentist may recommend an extraction.

There are two types of extractions – a simple extraction & a surgical extraction.

  • With a simple extraction, your dentist is able to loosen the tooth with an instrument referred to as an elevator. The tooth is then removed using forceps

  • If the tooth is broken off at the gum line or if there are other difficulties, your dentist may need to perform surgery to safely extract the tooth.

When is a tooth extraction necessary?

Our dentists at Aldinga Dental Clinic will always endeavour to try and save your teeth whenever possible as they understand the importance of maintaining a functioning and aesthetic dentition. However, sometimes it is necessary to extract a tooth or teeth and although every patient is different, there are some common issues that might make an extraction necessary for you.

Severe damage to the tooth: Trauma or severe decay can damage a tooth beyond repair. In situations where alternative procedures are not an option, we may advise that your tooth needs to be removed.

Crowded mouthSometimes teeth can struggle to break through the gum line if adjacent teeth are too big or are blocking the tooth from growing properly. If space needs to be freed up, teeth can be removed. This sort of procedure is particularly common in people who require orthodontics.

Severe gum diseaseIn cases of severe gum disease resulting in advanced loss of attachment around a tooth, the tooth may become very loose and require removal.

Tooth Extraction Procedures

We understand that having a tooth extraction can be stressful for patients, so we always take extra measures to make your comfort a priority. When performing tooth extractions, our dentists will use a local anaesthetic and monitor your comfort throughout the procedure. We will also provide you with pain relief to help you keep comfortable after the procedure.

Simple extraction

This is the most common form of tooth/teeth removal and usually involves the extraction of fully erupted teeth which are not severely decayed or broken down. For this procedure our dentists will carefully and gently remove the tooth in one piece with the aid of special forceps.

Sectional extraction

Sectional tooth extraction procedures are generally performed on teeth with multiple roots, which tend to be the molars at the back of the mouth, which are otherwise difficult to remove using forceps alone. For this procedure, our dentists will need to carefully separate the roots and remove them one by one to extract the tooth.

Surgical extraction

Surgical tooth extractions usually involve the removal of ‘impacted’ teeth (teeth that are only partially or not visible) and those which are badly broken down. For example, wisdom teeth are often impacted & need to be surgically removed.

For this procedure, our dentists will need to make an incision in the gum in order to expose the roots of the tooth. Sometimes, some bone tissue around the roots of the tooth is also required to extract the tooth. After the tooth is removed, stitches are placed to close the incision made in the gum.
