Root Canal Treatment

Striving to providing our patients with great smiles that will last

What is Root Canal Treatment?

The internal part of a tooth contains soft tissue known as the pulp. The pulp is found in canals inside the roots (root canals) and is made up of small nerves and blood vessels. The pulp tissue originates from small branches from the bone around the tooth roots. The pulp is what helps keep the tooth vital and fluid.

The pulp inside the root canals can become infected if a tooth is badly decayed, extensively broken down, or has an existing large restoration. Root canal treatment is necessary to save a tooth with infected pulp.

Root canal treatment involves removing the infected pulp from the root canals and then sealing this area to help avoid future infection. Without such treatment, the bone surrounding the tooth may become infected and a painful abscess may form.

Symptoms associated with an infected pulp (root canal):

  • Sensitivity to cold and hot fluids or foods

  • Pain when chewing

  • Spontaneous throbbing pain

  • Persistent dull toothache

Root Canal Treatment Procedure

The tooth is anaesthetized to ensure the root treatment will be comfortable for you

An opening is made into the pulp of the tooth in order to access the infected root canals

Tiny precision instruments and antibacterial solutions are then used thoroughly disinfect the root canals

The root canals are then filled with an inert material and a restoration is placed on the top part of the tooth to help prevent further infection.

Potential risks/complications of root canal treatment:

Although not common, there are some risks/complications associated with root canal treatment.

  • Failure of the treatment to remove all the infection
  • Fracture of a tiny precision instrument inside the root canal
  • Further breakdown of the crown (top part) of the tooth

If these complications so occur,  you may need to be referred to a root canal specialist (Endodontist) for further management or the tooth may need to be extracted.
