A thorough examination of the mouth is performed to ensure that the teeth and gums are healthy for the whitening procedure. Any tooth decay and gum disease must be treated before the whitening gel can be safely applied to the teeth. It is important to note that teeth whitening may need to be repeated in the future depending on your exposure to factors which cause teeth staining (such as coffee, wine, smoking).
There are two methods used for whitening teeth. After a thorough examination, we will advise you on which procedure is best suited for you.

Take-Home Whitening
Is made specifically for your teeth, to gently remove stains and discoloration.
- An impression is taken of your teeth so that a custom-made whitening tray can be fabricated. The custom-made tray minimizes contact of the whitening gel with your gums
- The whitening gel is placed into the whitening trays at your own leisure at home and worn for 15-30 minutes a day 4-7 days . As this procedure provides a gradual whitening effect, it allows more control over the level of whitening desirable for you
- An advantage of this system is that you retain the whitening trays upon completion of the procedure for any top-up whitening in the future — e.g. two to three years later

What are the risks/complications associated with teeth whitening?
- Some sensitivity of the teeth for a few days after the procedure. This can be reduced by the application of a ‘desensitising material’ to the teeth
- Sometimes inflammation of the gums can occur but this is not usually painful and normally settles within a day or two
- The level of whitening does vary between individuals and sometimes the procedure needs to be repeated to obtain the desired result
